Aaw, the 90s – a decade when mountain biking was still in its infancy and at the same time experiencing it meant wild youth. When you think about that era, imaginations of bikers in colorful jerseys and with big smiles on their faces immediately come to mind. In the 1990s, mountain biking experienced a real boom. This era is often considered the golden age of mountain biking, where an entire generation of cyclists fell in love with the freedom of the trails. With it's retro charm and the technological innovations of that time, this time is still alive today hearts of many enthusiasts. Neon-colors, hydraulic brakes, vintage shifting levers
colorful, flashy, bright - style & vibe of the 90s
The equipment
…was a bit, let's call it: "basic". Helme?
Sure, it existed, but they often looked more like colorful melon halves on their heads. Protective clothing? Yes, yes, but the knee and Elbow pads were more reminiscent of hockey gear from the 80s. The bikes themselves were masterpieces of technology of this time - steel or aluminum frames, which took punches with every jump and every root, 18-, 21- or 24-speed gear shifts were common. The shifting components from Shimano and SRAM dominated the market. Cantilever brakes or the then new V-brakes were standard and provided the necessary braking power.
And suspension forks? Pure luxury, if you even had one! Otherwise it was a case of shaking things around and hoping that the dentist would be there in case of an emergency.
It wasn't just about driving, but about exploring. The mountains were the playground, the forests the climbing frames. Every trail you ride down was a new adventure. And if you get lost? No problem, that was part of the fun! The freedom of just driving off, the adrenaline pumping through your veins and the wind whistling around your ears - it was pure bliss.
Colors and Style – The Era of Neon Explosion
Do you still remember the colors? It had to be screaming neon! Pink, green, yellow and blue bikes that were so bright you didn't even need to light them up at night. And the jerseys? Anyone who didn't have a psychedelic pattern on their shirt was out. The recipe for apparel of this time: Too much of everything. The fashion was a mix of pop art and techno rave - and that's exactly what made it so iconic.
Whooop, whoop: neon styles. Definitely back in style
